Weight loss surgery requires thorough psychological, physical and financial preparation. Our team of surgeons, medical physicians, allied health and support staff will help you navigate this process with ease.

Assess

Your surgeon will work with you to assess your BMI and obesity related health risk factors to determine if surgery is the safest and most appropriate option for you.

Plan

We obtain a thorough medical history, so we can assist you to make the best-informed decision for surgery and to optimise your health before surgery. As part of our comprehensive delivery of care, all our patients will see members of the multidisciplinary team. Preparation

To ensure you are medically fit for weight loss surgery your team will arrange:

  • Extensive blood tests 
  • A gastroscopy - a thin, flexible camera that examines the oesophagus and stomach
  • Review of pre-existing health conditions and current medications

The need for additional examinations will be assessed by your surgeon and/or medical physician, these may include: 

  • Electrocardiograph (ECG) a recording of the electrical activity in your heart
  • Echocardiogram - an ultrasound of your heart
  • Spirometry - lung function test
  • Chest X-ray
  • Abdominal ultrasound

Based on your results, your surgeon and/or medical physician may arrange further investigation, intervention or a post-operative Intensive Care Unit stay if warranted.

Please note smoking must be permanently ceased a minimum of 6 weeks prior to surgery

Procedure

As well as your surgeon, you will be cared for by a team of trusted and experienced medical and nursing professionals during your procedure and hospital stay.

Post Op

Your dietian will provide individualised, tailored support you as you transition through the post operative diet and beyond. Your nurse will support you as needed and address any questions or concerns you may have. Regular, gentle walking is encouraged soon after surgery and once your surgeon clears you, our exercise physiologists can help you implement an appropriate, achievable training regime to maximise your weight loss and physical health. Our counsellor and psychologist can work with you identify and work toward your goals as you adjust to your new lifestyle.

Success

Our team will guide you through the neccessary dietary and lifestyle adjustments as well as offering long term follow up to enable you to achieve and maintain your health goals. We encourage all patients to engage regularly with the allied health team including dietitians, exercise physiologists, psychologists/councellors and to access our resources and private Facebook group.

Following initial consultation and pre-operative investigations, a surgery date can usually be arranged within 4 to 6 weeks.
